A few months back, I couldn’t justify dropping over a thousand dollars at once for an electric bike, so I tried a rent-to-own plan. Thought I’d share how it worked out for me since a lot of people probably wonder if it’s worth it.
The plan I picked was about $80 a month with a small setup fee. The bike itself would have cost around $1,200 if I’d bought it outright. Over the contract period, I’ll end up paying closer to $1,500, so yes, it’s more expensive in the long run. But for me, spreading the cost over time made it manageable.
The good part is that maintenance was included, so when I had an issue with the brakes, they fixed it at no extra cost. I also didn’t stress about theft because some of these programs offer insurance or quick replacement, which adds peace of mind if you’re commuting daily.
If you ride every especially for work the convenience makes sense. But if you only ride on weekends or casually, it probably isn’t worth the higher total price. In that case, waiting a bit and buying up front saves money.
